West of the Ashley River from downtown Charleston is one of the Charleston area’s oldest suburban residential areas. Neighborhoods including Windermere, South Windermere, Byrnes Downs, Avondale and Moreland are closest to downtown just west of the Ashley River and many smaller cottages and homes are being renovated and updated. A convenient location close to downtown, shopping and restaurants make these West Ashley neighborhoods very trendy and popular today.
